How Much Do Managed IT Services Cost in Maine?

How managed IT is priced, what should be included, and the questions to ask before you sign.

If you run a Maine business with 5 to 100 people and no full-time IT staff, you've probably wondered whether a managed IT provider is worth it, and what it actually costs. Here's how pricing works and what to look for.

How managed IT is priced

Most providers charge a flat monthly fee, usually per user (each employee) or per device (each computer and server). Per-user pricing is now the most common, because one person often has a laptop, a phone and a tablet.

National pricing guides published in 2026 commonly put full-service managed IT somewhere around $100 to $200 per user per month, and roughly $200 to $400 for security-heavy plans built for regulated businesses. Lighter, help-desk-only plans cost less. Treat these as rough benchmarks: prices in Maine depend heavily on what's included, and the cheapest quote is often the one that leaves the most out.

What drives the price

  • Support hours: business hours only, or nights and weekends too.
  • On-site visits: included, or billed by the hour. In a state as large as Maine, this matters.
  • Security depth: basic antivirus versus 24/7 detection and response, staff training and dark-web monitoring.
  • Backup: whether backups are included, and whether anyone actually tests restoring them.
  • Compliance: healthcare, legal and financial offices need more documentation and controls.
  • Your starting point: an environment with old hardware and no documentation takes more work up front.

What should be included

A complete managed IT plan should cover, at minimum:

  • Unlimited help desk support by phone, email and remote session
  • 24/7 monitoring and automatic patching of computers and servers
  • Endpoint protection and multi-factor authentication
  • Backup of servers and Microsoft 365, with regular restore tests
  • Management of Microsoft 365 users and licenses
  • Regular reviews of your hardware, risks and IT budget

Hidden costs to ask about

  • Onboarding fees. Many providers charge a one-time fee to document and clean up your systems.
  • Project work. Office moves, new servers and migrations are usually billed separately.
  • Hardware and software licenses. Microsoft 365, backup storage and security tools may or may not be in the monthly price.
  • After-hours and on-site rates. Ask what happens when you need someone at 7 p.m. or in person.
  • Contract length and exit terms. How long are you committed, and will they hand over your passwords and documentation if you leave?

Is it worth it compared to hiring?

A full-time IT employee in Maine costs a salary plus benefits, and one person can't be an expert in networking, security, Microsoft 365 and phones at once, or cover their own vacations. For most small businesses, managed IT costs less than a hire and brings a whole team's skills. Larger offices that already have IT staff often use a provider alongside them, which is called co-managed IT.
