Avaya IP Office is one of the most common business phone systems in Maine offices, and many were installed years ago. If you've heard that IP Office is "end of life," here's what's actually true and what to do about it.
Is Avaya IP Office end of life?
The platform isn't, but older software releases are. Avaya announced in June 2024 that IP Office Release 11.1 and earlier had reached end of sale on August 12, 2024, with the end of manufacturer software support on August 12, 2025. Avaya stopped providing critical patches and service packs for those releases. The final R11 service pack was R11.1.3.2.
Meanwhile, Avaya continues to publish newer IP Office releases in the R12 line, so the product itself is still being developed.
Why it matters if your system is on an old release
- No security fixes. Phone systems connect to the internet and can be attacked. Unsupported software doesn't get patched.
- Harder repairs. If something fails, the fix may require upgrading first, often at the worst time.
- Compatibility. Newer phones, apps and SIP trunk providers may not work with old releases.
How to check your release
Your IP Office's software version appears in the IP Office Manager or Web Manager administration tools, and on some desk phones' status menus. If you don't have administrator access, perhaps because your installer is no longer around, that's the first thing to fix. A provider can recover access and read the version for you.
Your options
1. Upgrade to a supported release
Often the best choice if your hardware is supported and the system still fits your business. You keep your phones and your staff's habits. Upgrades may require new licenses.
2. Keep it running, with eyes open
If the system is stable and replacement is coming soon, you can keep it, provided it's protected behind a properly configured firewall, its configuration is backed up, and you have a plan if it fails.
3. Move to the cloud
A cloud system like RingCentral removes the on-site hardware entirely, and calls can ring on desk phones, cell phones and laptops. You pay monthly per user.
4. Switch to a lower-cost system
Grandstream and Sangoma phone systems offer the features most small offices use, such as auto attendants, ring groups and voicemail to email, with low ongoing costs.
